One thing I really like about the frozen yogurt ice cream sorbet maker is the variety of frozen desserts you can make with it. Sometimes I wonder about spaces in the English language. For example, take “icecream”.
People often think icecream like icecream maker should be one word. But most people know that ice cream is two words.
Personally, I like to think of icecream as one word — mainly because two words indicates that the cream would be icy. Instead perhaps it should be frozen cream.
I have a good friend who leaves spaces out of most words. For instance when she sends me recipes she sends me icecream recipes. This creates a problem only when I’m going back through emails and trying to search for the email. If I search for “ice cream” I can’t find the recipe. I need to search for icecream.
Maybe icecream as one word comes from the childhood rhyme. “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.” In this case people might write icecream.
Another thing that is nice about using two words is that the second word being capitalized looks better. Sure, looks don’t always matter, but in this case they do.
Here are some other words that are commonly written as one word but can also be two:
1) a lot versus alot
2) everytime vs every time
3) maybe vs may be
4) into vs in to
In the later two examples it is correct to sometimes use either of them. It depends on the context.
Back to my favorite tasty frozen delight: Ice Cream. After thinking through the issue a bit more, I think it makes sense to write the phrase as “ice cream maker” not “icecream maker”. But, commonly these things are misspelled, and that is why spell check always helps.
Regardless, I thought I would take the time on my first post to correct this common misspelling.
